HISTORY & HAUNTING

The town of Marshall was established in 1830. At one time it was thought Marshall would be the location of the State Capitol. In fact, the Governor's Mansion was built in anticipation of that event. However, as it turned out, Marshall lost the designation by one vote.

Marshall was a key stop from stagecoaches and railroad to weary travelers on their way to Detroit or Chicago. It was also a main route on the Underground Railroad with countless slaves taking refuge here on their flight to freedom.

Many of the town's original buildings and homes remain standing today.

governorGOVERNOR'S MANSION: The home was built in 1839. Currently, it is home to the Mary Marshall Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

There have been reports of the spirit of a young girl seen wandering the grounds and hallways. Who the little girl is remains unknown.

It is also said a female spirit remains within the walls of the mansion. It is thought to be the spirit of Mary, the wife of former Governor James Wright Gordon. Governor Gordon died unexpectedly in Brazil in 1852. Mary remains a the home mourning the death of her husband and waiting for him to return.

nationalTHE NATIONAL HOUSE INN: The building was constructed in 1835 and opened under the name of The Mann Hotel. At that time, it served as a hotel and stage coach stop for traverls on their way to Chicago or Detroit. It was also the place with political meetings were held and other important community gatherings.

When the railroad came through, the hotel remained popular with railroad travelers stopping to eat or spend the night .

Over the years, the hotel changed names many times using the names The Acker House and The Facey House, among others.

Around Prohibition, a hidden room was discovered at The National House. A room that was used to hide and sell illegal alcoholnational1900. That, of course, suggests its ties to The Mob and Al Capone's gang.

Around 1976 the building, then a deteriorating apartment building, went through major renovations. It was after this time reports of Paranormal activity began.

One of the most frequently seen visions, is that of a woman wearing a red dress. She has been seen by guests and staff. She doesn't disturb guests but, rather, wanders from room to room on some unknown journey. There are other spirits said to roam his 181-year-old inn. Perhaps on our weekend we'll discover who some of them may be.

cemeteryOAKRIDGE CEMETERY: Opened in 1839 and covers 65 acres of land with approximately 15,000 interments. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Michigan. Among the many burials are Marshall's most well-known citizens and political leaders.

There have been numerous reports of paranormal activity. Apparitions have been seen wandering through the gravestones, EVP's recorded and feelings of being touched.
